Rogue waves, once thought to be merely legend but since proven to exist, are rarely encountered walls of water that arise without warning, against the prevailing current and wave direction.
Rogue Wave
Such is the nature of the aptly named indie band Rogue Wave. Their sound is at once very Californian (they hail from Oakland) but with strong ties to the styles of established East Coast artists. Listen to just one song Eyes. At once you hear shades of Dylan, Donovan, Paul Simon and a host of sixties folk minstrels, but with a fresh sound that can take even a Beatles' standard and make it their own with that distinctively retro wall of sound.
Having previously released two albums, the first one self-released by band founder Zach Rogue, the band has found a new home with Brushfire records and are poised to release their new album, Asleep At Heaven's Gate, on September 18, 2007. Their sounds seems perfect for the Brushfire label that was founded by Jack Johnson in 2002.
The last year has been a rollercoaster one for the group. The group had to find a replacement for their bass guitarist, happily finding Patrick Abernethy, formerly of Beulah. Drummer Pat Spurgeon, born with only one kidney that ultimately failed had to undergo a second kidney transplant (the first was in 1993). There are some video cuts on YouTube of the benefit concert given to raise money for his operation.
