When I first heard Amy Winehouse, I thought "here's a voice that can contend with the greats - Aretha, Janis - here's a voice that can be legendary". It isn't that her voice is technically perfect, or that she can astound with extraordinary range, it's that she is so able to take what is inside her, turn herself inside out and give it all. The soul of Aretha, the raw honesty of Janis - that's Amy Winehouse.

She's done something unique with her music. Amy has taken pop culture and modern relationships, blended them with deeply personal lyrics and blended them all in her "return to Motown" sound for sweet songs that have a sharp bite.
Amy hit American airwaves like a tidal wave and her latest album "Back to Black" went Platinum in July. The infectious "Rehab" caught us with its cynical humor and Motown beat. We were behind her when she said "No, no, no" to rehab. But recently, Amy, emaciated and having come dangerously close to dying from an overdose of drugs, has entered rehab, left rehab to party with friends and now returns there.
Tragically, it seems that lately Amy is more Janis than Aretha. Her self-destruction progresses more rapidly by the day and yet, there's hope. Amy is only 23, if she can survive the next few years perhaps a maturity in her music and in herself will allow us to delight in her talent for many years to come.
