Scott Speed Heads Home

Scott Speed has broken his long silence regarding his future prospects and it seems he is no longer trying to remain in F1. In an interview with an Austrian newspaper, Salzburger Nachrichten, Scott said that he will be returning to the States and investigating possible drives in Champ Car or NASCAR.

He seems in no hurry and is perhaps taking the opportunity for a break before working seriously on a package for next year. Having accepted that he stands no realistic chance of getting a seat in the fierce driver market that F1 has become, Scott is instead upbeat about his chances in an American series, particularly Champ Cars. The departure of champion Sebastian Bourdais, ironically to Scott's last F1 team, Toro Rosso, certainly opens up the series to new signings.

Although Speed was not widely known in the States while he was driving in F1, the recent acrimonious split with his STR bosses is bound to have raised his profile and may well make his path into Champ Cars that much easier. Americans are feeling pretty bruised over the way F1 has treated them recently, particularly the loss of the USGP at Indianapolis, and this is bound to increase sympathy for and interest in Scott.

As readers of this blog will know, I have taken a special interest in Scott and consider him to have been under-rated by most F1 observers. I will be following his future career with interest, therefore, and hope that he succeeds in achieving his present objective, a drive in the Champ Cars series. Go get 'em, Scott!
