A just democracy will always be a balance between the judiciary, the police force and the legislature. The Police force will always want greater powers to enable them to do their job but it is the job of the law makers to see that their powers are in proportion and in balance with civil liberties. The unfortunate side effect to be being "the good guys" is we must play by the rules. Ideas like innocent until proven guilty and no detention without a fair trial make life harder for the police but there are very good reasons why we have enshrined them in law. Yes, by playing by the rules we WILL lose sometimes BUT if we stop playing by the rules and hold suspects without charge etc we are no longer the good guys. If we give police powers greater weight than we do to civil liberties we have become the bad guys. It must not happen.
