Gone Away ~ The journal of Clive Allen in America

Galveston, oh Galveston
26/12/2004

Here's hoping that everyone did as they were instructed and had a merry Christmas. I did.

My main Christmas present turned out to be something of a surprise. It consists of a few days vacation in a little place called La Marque on the coast of East Texas, near Galveston. Kathy was raised in La Marque and has always threatened to show me the place; but I had no idea that this would be happening so soon.

We leave Lawton today (Sunday, December 26th) and travel down to Dallas where we still stay overnight. Then on Monday we will drive down through East Texas, avoiding the major routes so that I can see the Big Thicket, and arriving in La Marque sometime in the afternoon. A couple of days on the coast there and we will return by a more direct route, stopping in Dallas once again, to be back in Lawton sometime on Thursday.

So that's the itinerary. I have not seen East Texas before (in fact, I haven't been south of Dallas as yet) and I'm hoping that it will provide me with fresh sights and insights that I can bore everyone with when I return. Apart from anything else, it's a couple of years now since I last saw the sea and this will be the first time that I see the Gulf. Cool, huh?

Of course, this means that I will be strangely silent for a few days. Fear not, dear friends, for I shall return, perhaps bearing tales of strange encounters with sea food and sand. It is not inconceivable that I might even be humming a tune about "Galveston, oh Galveston" when next you see me. Be warned!

Until then I wish you all happy holidays and a bounteous New Year.

Clive

Ahh, Gulf coast Texas. It is a very cool place to have a cerveza in the sun. Godspeed, Gone.

I love the entire Galveston area (just not in the middle of July). You've chosen wisely (or your wife has, rather) to go mid winter. I pray that you have a truely adventerous journey and are ready to tell countless tales of it upon your return.

I think we all missed the point. Here is an opportunity to talk about him when he's not here. It would at least keep your thumbs busy.

Awww, it's only fun to talk about people when they ARE here-- otherwise, how would they know what we were saying?

Well, you could always pretend that I'm still away...

I sure hope everyone had as glorious a New Year's celebration as I did -- and by glorious, I mean a $300+ bar tab. ;-)

For a moment there (I think it was around 11:48) I wondered what it is about humankind that makes us attach such importance to seemingly arbitrary dates. . .

But then someone put more tequila in front of me.

C'est la guerre.

Okay, you're back. So post something for crying out loud, Way's thumbs are in jeopardy here.

Gone Away
If we have to celebrate something, I guess it might as well be arbitrary dates. Which reminds me - whatever happened to the millenium bug? I can remember watching New Zealand as the year 2000 clicked into place, having decided that if the kiwis all suddenly disappeared, we'd better start running westwards as fast as we could...

I will write something, I promise. I tried very hard yesterday but everything's still jumbled up in my head and needs processing. We took an extra day in Galveston so there's plenty to write about. Today, I think I can just about manage a little something.

When 2000 ticked by across the world I watched intently as it spread across the former Soviet Union and when no ICBMs accidentally launched due to the ancient 70's technology which was the last and best they had managed to steal from us, I decided the rest of the world would be safe, but I had my Y2K compliant flashlight by my side just in case. Strangely, I gave no thought to New Zealand whatsoever, not even that Yahoo Serious guy. I wonder whatever happened to him?

I almost died on New Year's Day 2000 at 0:00:27 or so. Some guy in front of me in the crowd let loose with a magnum of bubbly over his head, and the cork whizzed by about 3 inches from my forehead.

Did you know?

New Zealand boasts an amazing 50 sheep for every orc?

The perils of celebration... How would that have looked as an epitaph? And nothing surprises me about New Zealand. You have to be a little crazy to be that good at rugby. :D
